Freight temperature procedure

WHO:                   Driver

WHERE:               All customer sites

WHEN:                 Prior to loading and/ or unloading freight

Purpose

To establish that the product is at the appropriate temperature. This procedure needs to be followed for all temperature-controlled goods that are picked up and delivered. Failure to comply with this procedure will be considered a serious breach of company policy.

Planning

You should have been issued with a temperature probe at the commencement of your employment, if not or if it is malfunctioning replacements are available from Driver Welfare.

Equipment required

Probe

If you have any doubts about the temperature of your load, contact your Operations Supervisor immediately.

NOTE:

Under no circumstances are you to open or penetrate a product or carton.

Please ensure you place the probe between the boxes or cartons as demonstrated in the picture.


Loading & Unloading

All frozen and chilled product must be probed at the time of pick up/delivery. The temperature, as probed must be recorded on the Daily Run Sheet.

Pickup should not be performed if chilled products are probed warmer than 5°C or frozen products are probed warmer than -18°C. In the event this occurs, the relevant Operations Supervisor must be contacted.

The following are the required temperatures for different classes of freight.  This guidance appears under the panel where you set your fridge temperatures.

Additional information on setting temperatures can be found in the Drivers Manual which would have been given to you upon commencement of employment. 

If you don’t have experience using fridge vans please consult a member of the Driver Training Team.

If you are not sure what temperature your van should be set to call your Operations Supervisor.
